Come out of the closet: admit you are an A-Santa
There was a point in my life when I was a believer. Yes, until about 6 years old I did believe in Santa. I cherished the worship season when we shamelessly shopped the king of tree to create a short-term ephemeral altar full of colorful decorations in adoration of God-Santa. It took only a few years to understand that the greater the worship, even brief, the greater the rewards. Even after evidences started to pill-up, with visit to appropriate stores, poorly hidden boxes, suspicious wrapping paper remains, lack of chimney or even opened-windows, obvious noises from the masters bedrooms to the altar, the trust in the true god Santa remain. The costs of the worship was minimal with the few reminders to the high Priests of the belief in Santa, and a little help in building the evergreen altar which anyway was salaried in its weight of cookies. With this minimal effort, the rewards were marvelous, so why stop? A couple of years later, when all remaining belief was gone, I blindly kept pretending to justify a desperately needed bike. Probably around 8 years of age, even God-Santa’s high clerics did not buy the obvious lack of faith, and I had to exchange “worship” for house chores… what a descent into reality…. I had become a-Santa, without Santa.
Although I started reading searching for other easy life style and worship, reading the great Greek mythologies, but neither Zeus nor Jupiter, despite their somewhat believable adventures could provide reliable relief. In my environment, we luckily avoided other cruel, discriminative, reclusive and less believable best sellers of the various editions of the mainstream industrial religions. At the beginning of adolescence, I could have like to become a Neptunian or a Poseidoniste. I was in adoration with ocean creatures, and would have dreamt to become a disciple, and even took on swimming. I therefore cannot blame the Islamic Radicals. I was also hoping that Neptune would bring to me a horde of Mermaids; these long-tailed, beautiful, shapely, longhaired, naked dreams. When I finally got my first one, it was clear that it was just not magic, and the beautiful songs slowly became dissonant words, the long legs seemed to become shorter, the plump naked breasts became tiny and hidden, and the long silky hair shorter and tinted a $100 a credit card puncture. May be that should be a lesson learned for the Jihadist: eternity is very short – A virgin mermaid is only virgin “once” – what to you do the days after?
Looking back, therefore, seeing the turmoil, the massacres, the wars, simply because everyone believe it has only the true mermaids, or mermen, just wake-up. I do admire the Krauss, Dawking, deGrasse Tyson wasting their great minds debating mermaid believers, but I do not even classify as an atheist. I cannot be without “something I never had, but I admit now that I can be only be defined as an A-Santa, as I did believe in Santa for a couple of year, albeit at 6 years of age, the intellectual level of a trained Chimpanzee.
Despite all this, after many years living in the United States, I became a citizen. This seems odd as the country is in the lower end of educated modern nations with between 60 to 80% of the population, depending on the poles, still believing that Man was created, and created 10,000 year ago. That is the reason why I cannot break the tie with my birth country France, with fewer than 10 to 20% suffering still from legendivitis. This is better than neighboring country in Germany, but still higher than Nordic states. Europe has still some laggard like Spain and Poland, and yes England suffering from remnants for royalistis, a necessary side effect of legendivitis.
Although the United States screams for liberty of choice, it is unthinkable that a “non-sufferer” could ever be elected, at any position. So much for representativeness! Why then join the United States? Well! First, there is at least 20% sensible persons, and like oppressed minorities, are more active and forceful. Second, other must believe like me that this is just a show. Most of the allusion for “Gods” in all administrative matters, constitution, pledges, have been added quite recently. In my view, the United States have declared openly the only true god, to which I gave my pledge during my naturalization, to which I vow trust, and which I carry in my wallet all the time or keep safely stacked in my pension plan. Yes, “In God We Trust” and so do I. God is everywhere in America. The American Pope is chosen for several years, the bishops selected and approved for 14 years, the main cathedral in Fort knox, and dioceses in each State. The churches have branches in all cities and compete merrily, giving out green Sutras in various denominations of 10, 20, 100s at almost every corner. Once a year every citizen gives joyfully to the IRS (Imaginary Religious System) to ensure the sustainability, and access to retirement heaven.
Yes, America has the only true God at the moment. That is what is missing in the Euro Zone. It seceded from the true God and encountered many hurdles, the least of which the true acceptance of the mighty power. Greeks worshiped the Euro, in the same way as I worshiped before I became a true A-Santa, without real conviction, and no fear of the might of the not-so-mighty God Euro, worshiping with the left hand and ripping profit with the right. To survive, the God Euro must be harsh like all religions and squash the weak and half-believers. May be the Greek should become A-Santa, before the become A-Euro.
